Municipal government is the closest level of government to us, and can be felt and seen in our day to day life, making politics part of our everyday life. When we see it like that we can start to see our community differently and begin to see our role within it. Our public services are an integral part in having a strong and thriving community. About the Region of Waterloo

Services the Region of Waterloo Provides

The Region of Waterloo provides more than 60% of municipal services in Waterloo Region. Waterloo Region is made up of 7 local municipalities, 3 cities and 4 townships:

Cambridge
Kitchener
Waterloo
North Dumfries
Wellesley
Wilmot
Woolwich

The Region has a Council composed of a Regional Chair, 8 directly elected Regional Councillors, and the Mayors of the 7 local municipalities. There are:

4 Elected Kitchener Regional Councillors (*I’m running for one of these seats*)
2 Elected Cambridge Regional Councillors
2 Elected Waterloo Regional Councillors

Regional Council provides direction and leadership for the organization. With their direction, Region of Waterloo staff work alongside community partners and other levels of government.

Business and Permits: Issues business licenses, special event permits, and waste management services.
Seniors and Long-Term Care: Runs long-term care facilities like Sunnyside Home, plus dementia care and adult wellness programs.
Housing and Shelters: Operates affordable housing programs and emergency transitional supports.
Social and Employment Services: Delivers income support, employment training, and coordinates affordable child care.
Public Health: Offers sexual health clinics, health inspections, clean air spaces, dental clinics, infectious disease prevention and vaccinations, pregnancy and child health support, paramedic services, and road safety initiatives.
Museums and Archives: Runs community heritage projects through dedicated historic sites, public funding, and community archive.
